1 Tim 1: 1-11 – God’s 2 restraints on evil explained
Today we commence our study in Paul’s 1st letter to Timothy. Timothy apparently became a believer through the witnessing of Paul. Timothy was a frequent team member of Paul’s travelling evangelical team. Participating in Paul’s 2nd & 3rd missionary journey’s. This epistle was written, after Paul was released from his Roman incarceration where Acts ends. So we can estimate this was written within a few years of AD 62. The term pastoral epistles, were widely applied to 1 & 2 Timothy & Titus in the 18th century. I personally reject this label as corrupted by modern Balaam following Christian industry types. It gives people the wrong impression that this letter is written for our modern corrupted, paid, theologically trained, religious elites. Those with pompous letters before their names, & titles different to the rest of us, Reverend, rather than Mr. No – this letter was written to Timothy, a young man in training under Paul. & is highly useful to all saints of God to study & learn from, as with all of Paul’s epistles.
1 Tim 1B – Can a Christian shipwreck their faith?
Today we’ll pick up at verse 12 of I Timothy 1 & complete the 1st chapter. Paul will explain God’s greater purpose in his own personal dramatic conversion. Paul will present the simple gospel in words even a young child can understand. He’ll give a short prayer of praise to Jesus. Then Paul will command Timothy to step up. Paul saw Timothy as his replacement. & to close the chapter, Paul presents the sad warning of 2 men who shipwrecked their faith.
